Acne Treatment

Acne is a common word used for any bump or condition in which pimples appear on the face, chest, and back. The acne may appear flat, raised or as a rash depending on your genetics, age, lifestyle and health.  Your skin reflects your internal health. Dermatologists generally treat acne topically with medicine or suggest a medical acne treatment of some type in their office which will give a temporary fix. However, many skin conditions are simply clogged pores that have become irritated and can be greatly improved and even healed by simple daily skin care habits, nutritional adjustments, and professional skin care products.. Our professional products contain the same ingredients medical spas carry without the prescription and without the markup. They are void of synthetic fragrance and parabens, (toxic chemical preservatives) which commonly cause irritation for some skin types. If your condition is beyond our scope of practice, we have great references for prescriptions, or a medical treatment.

Acne Breakouts and Their Cause

Cheek acne reflects your digestive health. Common food allergens are dairy, soy, corn, grains, eggs, sugar, and nuts. Digestive acne is the easiest to treat. An elimination diet may point out the food allergy. Lip, chin, jaw line and neck acne is often cystic and reflects hormonal imbalances. Nutritional adjustments greatly reduce this condition along with professional skin care products. Once the acne appears on the back, chest and shoulders  it has been building for years. Fruit and vegetable cleansing and nutritional supplements treat this acne if you have the patience to follow through with the protocol. Dermatologists may prescribe Acutane  (Vitamin A) for this condition. We recommend ACUMAX, a 4 month skin supplement program for acne which has phenomenal results! Call us for more information.

Our Acne Treatment Process

Our professional estheticians have helped many clients with acne and will customize your acne treatment based on your skin type. Upon completion of your skin profile, a complimentary 15 minute consult will give us the information we need to recommend the best facial treatment for you. We perform manual extractions and you will not look horrible when you leave!! We carry Jane Iredale Mineral Makeup which is good for the skin and used by dermatologists and surgeons. We will apply it if you need before you leave.

In teenagers, acne usually appears on the forehead, nose, and chin. It may be caused by the overproduction of sebum as hormonal changes occur. Sebum is an oily substance that forms in glands just under the surface of the skin called sebaceous glands. Different skin types have varying degrees of oil. Sebum normally flows out hair follicles onto the skin to act as a natural skin moisturizer. The glands are connected to hair follicles that allow the sebum, or oil, to empty onto the skin through a pore.

If hair follicles become blocked by sebum, dead skin cells, and bacteria, acne is the result. During puberty, there are increased levels of the male hormone androgen. Males and females may have hormone imbalance. High levels of androgen cause excess sebum to form. Sometimes the sebum combines with dead, sticky skin cells and

bacteria called Propioni-bacterium acnes (P. acnes) that normally live on the skin. The mixture of oil and cells allows the bacteria to grow in the plugged follicles. When this happens, a hard plug called a comedone can form. Proper cleansing with a professional cleanser will often control this buildup, preventing clogged skin and a breakout.

A comedone is an enlarged hair follicle. It can take the following forms:

  • a blackhead, which is a comedone that reaches the skin’s surface and looks black.
  • a whitehead, which is a comedone that is sealed by keratin, the fibrous protein produced by the skin cells and looks like a white bump.

In addition, pimples can form on the skin. Types of pimples include:

  • papules, which are small, red bumps that may be tender to the touch
  • pustules, which are pus-filled lesions that are often red at the base
  • nodules, which are large, painful lesions deep in the skin
  • cysts, which are painful pus-filled lesions deep in the skin that can cause scarring
